Premiering on Fox’s Night at the Movies at 7pm on 13th September 1993, you might think it’s hampered by the need to cater to a broad audience – but that’s quickly snuffed out by the R-rated VHS cut from Vidmark, whose sole addition is a naked shower scene as opposed to the towel-wrapped version that appeared on the gogglebox. The potential is there for first-time screenwriter Raul Fernandez to pen something with edge and with guile, but the result is frustratingly flaccid. The most damning aspect of Just One of the Girls is that it’s so unremarkable. Needless to say, it doesn’t go to plan, and he finds himself having to adopt a whole new wardrobe to get through school. Desperate to avoid their lurking presence on the college steps, he adopts a feminine disguise to get himself through the doors, with the intention of a quick bathroom break to revert back to a guy. However, when the opportunity arises to switch schools to take advantage of a prominent music program, he’s unaware that his new place of learning is home to the bullies that have been making his life hell. Sixteen-year-old Chris Calder is a talented musician who harbours the hope of a scholarship that will give him the chance to fulfil his dreams. While Just One of the Girls is no stain on the video store landscape, it certainly falls short of the wit, vibrancy and cultural impact of its unrelated predecessor. It certainly explains the film’s title, with concerned producers hoping to tardily ride the coattails of Lisa Gottlieb’s Just One of the Guys (1985) which pulled in decent box office for Columbia. In the decade prior it was less of a trend – particularly once you discount the queer-spiced perfection of both The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) – so perhaps that’s why JUST ONE OF THE GIRLS feels a little isolated. Recommended for anyone who can watch any number of Corey Haim's early 90s disasters and actually find them enjoyable.Dave thinks this Corey Haim genderswap comedy could have done with more sass.Ĭomedies that dabble in a little genderswapping go back to the dawn of cinema – though it’s fair to say that it was the early to mid ’00s when they really hit their stride with the likes of The Hot Chick (2002), She’s the Man (2006), It’s a Boy Girl Thing (2006), and White Chicks (2004) (the latter of which even throwing race into the equation). And, I especially cringe at Corey Haim's half-concocted Italian-American accent that reared itself during random moments, not to mention his terrible array of slang, especially in many of the references to women. Nor, does it flip with the sharp turns of the truck and the lack of support by his weight. Or, the finale in which brave Nelson is being dragged from a truck while holding onto a chain link fence that neither eletrocutes him or gets too hot to hold as it is scraped across the pavement for miles. I particularly enjoy the scene in which Nelson and dear old dad, trying to escape from the police by anchoring over a bridge, plunge thousands of feet straight down into shallow, rocky rapids and live to tell the pletely unscathed, mind you. It has all the depth of the notorious 'Cool as Ice' "action" film (ranked as one of the worst 100 movies on IMDb), and about as much of the same cheesy writing. But, the team are not as invincible as they think they are when they're busted for robbing a bank in a squat town in Utah around the same time a stranger to the past enters their lives as does their scheming former partners. Only Nelson's dad expects it to be temporary, wanting his son to go legit so he can end up in law school or business school (the man has no clear idea of his expectations as to which graduate school track he expects his son to take other than whatever will allow an easy transition into white collar crime) much to the chagrin of Nelson, who loves the life of easy money. After a disagreement among their gang of four which included a clueless doofus and a black belt blonde, Nelson (Corey Haim) and his dad decide to rob banks alone. Fast Getaway is the light-comedy adventures of a team of father-and-son bankrobbers. This being, of course, yet another film in which those not so overly nostlagic will realize that Corey had hit rock bottom and would never recover. Good lord, I've got to stop wasting my money on movies from the post-1989 catalog of Corey Haim (except for Prayer of the Rollerboys, which was a decent surprise). The iPhone that Jobs debuted to the world in 2007 fueled Apple's rise to become the most valuable company, but nothing lasts forever. Not everyone would agree with the latter point. But, he adds, "just because everybody is looking for new doesn't mean it's not working." "For four or five years, the playbook is the same that's been done," says Amit Sharma, a former Apple exec on the online store team. There's now a feeling among some Apple insiders that the company is just running the same product playbook that Jobs created in his final years at the helm. It's also a vision and push for the next big thing. Some of his people have it and some don't." Steve had that and he was a brutal enforcer of his taste," says Segall. "Taste is one of those things that everyone on Earth thinks they have even when they don't. That process has raised doubts among some close to Apple. "But I think it's still with the understanding that Tim owns the team architecture." "It's more of gaining consensus," says Bryson Gardner, who directed development for various iPod and iPhone models until 2013, on the decision making process under Cook compared to Jobs. With Jobs gone, the approach to product and design decisions changed as well.Ĭook, not known for his product sensibility, leans more on executives like design chief Jony Ive and head of software engineering Craig Federighi to oversee product decisions, according to former employees. "It wasn't like you were going to put these six incredible people on this mission. "It felt like a different place fundamentally," said one former employee, whose team grew from a dozen to well over 100 during his few years there before leaving in 2013. Related: Apple's Tim Cook on his mistakes and what the future holds Yet even small product and design teams saw their numbers grow in a way that Jobs typically resisted. Much of that headcount growth is due to Apple opening dozens of additional retail stores and investing in research and development for new product categories. We have talked about things and been more transparent about what we're doing," Cook said in a recent interview with The Washington Post, when asked how Apple's culture has changed.Ĭook also said: "The obvious things are we have more employees. "We have stepped up our social responsibility. Related: Apple ups China bet with first R&D centerĪpple declined to comment for this story beyond public statements made by Cook in recent weeks. Now you'll find a big company that feels like a big company, with a swelling headcount and what several former employees described as a creeping bureaucracy.Īpple had 110,000 full-time employees as of the end of September 2015, nearly doubling from the 60,400 employees it reported having in September 2011, shortly after Cook took over, according to annual filings with the SEC. "Steve hated the way big companies worked." All the big decisions were made with relatively few people," says Ken Segall, the former Apple ad man who worked closely with Jobs for years and helped create the "Think Different" campaign. "Apple under Steve Jobs always felt like a small company. Gone is the feeling of a small, nimble company run by a visionary founder who can single-handedly make major product, design and marketing decisions on his own. However, this must be weighed against what Apple has lost in recent years. Related: Apple slips as worries about iPhone sales lingerīy putting social justice front and center, Cook may make Apple a more attractive brand for employees and customers. "It just wasn't the thing Apple led with." "I actually felt like Apple always had a very strong internal social compass, even when Steve was there," says Holly Shelton, who led MacBook product marketing at Apple until 2013. Another employee said there was definitely a "louder environmental voice" inside the company pushing it to be greener. Teams are encouraged to be more aware of Apple's supply chain and any red flags they might notice on trips abroad, according to one former employee. Under Cook's leadership, Apple finally began matching charitable contributions from employees, which had long been a sore spot for staff. If Jobs put a dent in the universe through Apple's coveted products, Cook is making his mark by highlighting the importance of social efforts: LGBT rights, philanthropy, corporate diversity, renewable energy and improving manufacturing conditions abroad. But that's probably not what Cook will be known for. Nearly every employee praised Cook, previously Apple's COO, for being a savvy operator who deftly manages a complex global business and its relationship with suppliers, retailers and investors. Related: Apple says it now pays women, men, whites and minorities equally We knew Eight Miles High was a special song and wanted to record it properly. “Round the squares huddled in storms” refers to bad weather in London and people clustered in doorways to avoid the rain coming down in sheets. And the line about a “rain grey town” was mine. The reference to black limousines means the Austin Princess, a bulbous British car that record companies used a lot because it was cheaper than a Bentley. And they were extremely welcoming, driving us home from gigs, taking us to dinner and parties. Of course, the press jumped on us for that, but the Beatles knew we’d never say a thing like that because we worshipped them. A terrible promoter billed us as “America’s answer to the Beatles”. “Nowhere is there warmth to be found” refers to our treatment by the British press. We struggled to understand people – there must have been 25 different British accents. We were 21, had never been out of the States, and everything was alien. The line “And when you touch down, you’ll find it stranger than known” is about the disorientation we felt. We all wrote it together in a Winnebago motorhome, hurriedly swapping lyrics and ideas for the chord progression. But if Roger says it was his idea, maybe it was. I thought it was Gene’s idea to write a song about our trip to London – he was a wonderful, talented man. It does refer to the altitude of that flight, but it was a deliberate double entendre. Of course Eight Miles High was a drug song. I gotta get off.” I remember saying: “You can’t be a Byrd if you can’t fly.”ĭavid Crosby, singer-songwriter/rhythm guitar We’d get on a plane, and he’d be in a cold sweat, standing up in the aisle, saying: “I can’t stay on this plane, man. Gene left the band the month Eight Miles High was released. We put out a statement refuting those claims, but it was the end of our commercial success. When the song came out, some DJs did the sums and realised that, since commercial airliners only flew at six miles, we must have been talking about a different kind of high. Gene asked: “How high do you think that plane was flying?” I thought about seven miles, but the Beatles had a song called Eight Days a Week, so we changed it to Eight Miles High because we thought that would be cooler. It was our first time on a plane, and I had the idea of writing a song about it. The previous year, 1965, we’d been on a trip to England. That wasn’t the case: it was a collaborative effort between myself, Gene and David Crosby. In later years, Gene started to fantasise that he wrote the whole song. I was in love with his saxophone playing: all those funny little notes and fast stuff at the bottom of the range.Īt the same time, Gene Clark had some chords and a vague melody, which went into the more regular structure of Eight Miles High. It had a recurring phrase, dee da da da, which I picked up on my Rickenbacker guitar and played some jazzy stuff around it. There was one Coltrane track called India, where he was trying to emulate sitar music with his saxophone. By the end of the tour, Coltrane and Shankar were ingrained. It was the only music we had, for the whole time on the bus. But I had some blank tapes so recorded the Coltrane albums, along with some Ravi Shankar, and took them on tour. I had just picked up a cassette recorder – it was such a new thing, you couldn’t buy any tapes to play in it. We were on a tour of America, and someone played us the Coltrane albums Africa/Brass and Impressions. Perhaps she shames him with her simplicity. Why does he avoid her? Bresson never supplies motives. Michel does not want to see his mother, but gives Jeanne money for her. She comes to Michel with the news that his mother is dying. She is a neighbor of Michel's mother, and the lover of Michel's friend Jacques ( Pierre Leymarie). The woman in “Pickpocket” is named Jeanne ( Marika Green). Michel, like the hero of Crime and Punishment, has a good woman in his life, who trusts he will be able to redeem himself. The reasoning is immoral, but the characters claim special privileges above and beyond common morality. Bresson's Michel, like Dostoyevsky's hero Raskolnikov, needs money in order to realize his dreams, and sees no reason why some lackluster ordinary person should not be forced to supply it. In this story you may sense echoes of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, another story about a lonely intellectual who lived in a garret and thought he had a license, denied to common men, to commit crimes. That is his moment of release, of triumph over a lesser person-although of course his face never reflects joy. He waits for a moment of distraction, and then opens their purses or slips their wallets from their coats. On the Metro or at the racetrack, he stands as close as possible to his victims, sensing their breathing, their awareness of him. Also, of course, he gets an erotic charge out of stealing. He sits in his garret and reads his books, and treasures an image of himself as a man so special that he is privileged to steal from others. He gathers his narcissism around himself like a blanket. He could probably get a job in a day if he wanted one. To one of them, in a cafe, he wonders aloud if it is all right for an “extraordinary man” to commit a crime-just to get himself started? He usually wears a suit and tie, disappears in a crowd and has few friends. Martin Lassalle, the star of “Pickpocket,” plays Michel as an unexceptional man with a commonplace face. Instead of asking his actors to “show fear,” Bresson asks them to show nothing, and depends on his story and images to supply the fear. What we see in the pickpocket's face is what we bring to it. No emotion, no style, no striving for effect. All Bresson wanted was physical movement. He famously forced the star of “ A Man Escaped” (1956) to repeat the same scene some 50 times, until it was stripped of all emotion and inflection. The questions become whether this life is indeed self-fulfilling for him, whether the police will eventually catch up with him, and whether he can find anything else in life that he finds just as exhilarating to replace picking pockets.Or do we? Bresson, one of the most thoughtful and philosophical of directors, was fearful of “performances” by his actors. As he goes about his business, he can spot other pickpockets and although is largely self taught, he does enter into a partnership with two others, one who shows him the tricks of the trade. He also believes the police know about him, but have yet been unable to prove any specific crimes, although he is unaware if they are actively pursuing him, despite frequent encounters with a certain inspector. With no other visible means of income, he believes some people in his life suspects what he does, such as his friend Jacques, while others have no idea, such as his sickly mother, who he loves but does not visit often, perhaps to avoid the obvious questions from her. He justifies his actions using what he is probably aware is a skewed set of morals. For example, he lives in a one room hovel with only a hook locking the door from inside. He does it through compulsion as he gets a feeling of exhilaration while committing his crimes, rather than for the money in and of itself as he does not spend it on outward material possessions.
